Please don’t give silly answers…

Answer by Jack
Should be. I do an investment banking internship with United Bank of Canada and I do History! As long as you know about markets and have an interest in finance, that should be enough because everything you’re going to be doing, you have to be trained for any way.

Critical Success Factors for implementing Quality Management Systems

Critical Success Factors for implementing Quality Management Systems

Article by Dr. Joseline Edward, PhD.

Business organizations have become more competitive in the 21st century due to globalization and growing competition. The global marketplace, changes in customer values, rapid changes in technology, and increased economic pressures on companies have led to an increased interest in quality management. Many organizations around the globe have implemented Quality Management Systems; using Quality Management tools, software and policies to improve their products and services quality.

As you might know already, critical success factors guarantee the successful implementation of Quality Management Systems. Based on the writings of QM Scholars including Crosby, Deming, Feigenbaum, Juran, Garvin, Ishikawa, Taguchi, and results from several QM implementation studies, the following factors can be considered as critical success factors of QM implementation.

1. Supplier partnership: An organization is a system that draws inputs from the environment and transforms them into outputs to make profit, with the majority of inputs coming from suppliers. This factor addresses the entire range of activities including how organizations maintain close relationship with their suppliers and their contribution to product quality, information sharing and performance.

2. People and customer management: This factor addresses how an organization manages its internal and external customers.

3. Communication of improvement information: This factor addresses the internal, external and cross communication between employees, communications between management and suppliers as well as customer to raise quality awareness throughout the organization.

4. Customer satisfaction orientation: A key characteristic that appears to be common in most QM implementation-oriented research is focus of both internal and external customers. The importance of customer satisfaction can be found in Deming’s seminal work. In the book Out of the Crisis, Deming (1986, p. 32) noted, “The consumer is the most important part of the production line. Quality should be aimed at the needs of the consumer, present and future.” Hence I would say this factor plays a major role in QM implementation.

5. External interface management: Quality must be defined in terms of customer satisfaction or customer delight. Due to changes in nature, determining customers’ future requirements and needs is very difficult now. To predict the customers’ future requirements, successful organizations maintain close contact with customers through various techniques such as surveys, focus groups, and so forth. Since this factor help organizations to design new products, features, and even new opportunities this is a very critical process for successfully implementing Quality Management (QM).

6. SQM: Strategic quality management links business strategy with quality. Juran defined SQM as a systematic approach for maintaining quality throughout an organization. He says “Strategic quality plans are the glue holding together an organization’s quality improvement efforts”. Several recent research results shows that this factor also plays a major role in QM implementation.

7. Operational quality planning: Operational quality planning addresses short-term planning for QM implementation. This factor can be treated as a subset of SQM. At the SQM level, organizations integrate quality planning into the overall corporate strategy planning process. Once the quality goal is cascaded to everyone in an organization, middle management (or managers) creates short-term plans to achieve the organizational objective. This factor includes how to determine customer needs and expectations, how to develop a product or service to meet the expectations, and how to design and develop a product. By looking at Crosby’s zero-defect planning approach and MBNQA criteria (Baldrige National Quality Program, 2005), I would say operational quality planning can be considered as an essential factor for quality improvement.

8. Quality improvement measurement: Quality improvement measurement addresses the measurement of quality improvement and it needs various data including statistical process control (SPC) charts, productivity indicators, and performance-related data. The measurement of quality places a significant role on quality implementation because it provides an opportunity to identify the defects (or errors) in a process or service. As Crosby says, “Measurement lets us know what we are getting for our money, and in what manner it is being expended, we can easily predict the importance of this factor in QM implementation.

9. Corporate quality structure: A common set of values, beliefs, attitudes, perceptions, and accepted behaviors shared by individuals within an organization is called culture. Due to globalization, most of the companies have operations from different parts of world. Hence, this factor can be considered as a critical success factor.

10. Employee empowerment: Empowerment enables everyone in an organization to use the quality improvement models as a learning methodology in every business activity to keep improving every aspect of everything the organization does. Based on the empirical evidence from prior researches, one can consider empowerment as a principal ingredient for QM implementation.

11. Quality citizenship: Ethical behavior is essential to everyone in an organization. A clear code of ethics provides a direction to everyone to align his or her personal values with the organization’s goals to build a stronger workplace. Also, code of ethics provides various benefits to employees, management, and society. As a result of corporate scandals (for example, Goldman Sachs Scandal & Telecom Scandal in India) and very common unethical behavior in workplace, corporate social responsibility can be considered as a critical success factor for QM implementation.

Can you think of more factors that are required to implement QM successfully? Please share your views.

People Management – Ten Steps to Success!

People Management – Ten Steps to Success!

People management skills are vital for managers – it may sound simple, yet some managers find it so challenging.

But there are just a few simple ideas that you can start to incorporate.

To get the best results you have to be very good at people management…and it’s not as hard as you might think.

Here are the secrets of the very best managers:-

The best at people management…

1) Manage!

They focus on getting their people to deliver the key activities and don’t attempt do too much themselves. The best managers delegate widely, using the ethic ‘Ask for forgiveness, not for permission’ to free their people from blame or wrongdoing.

2) Build the Best Teams

Leveraging the exceptional talents of all the people around them, managers develop and utilise capability fully – and glue it together.

3) Focus on Delivery

Managers are there to deliver the day to day tactical results the business or organisation needs. Here, there is little space for strategy or vision as such, but those great at managing peoplewill keep a reference point there. Every manager’s defined goal is measurable results.

4) Build Relationships

As it’s all about people, great managers build relationships easily and make it a priority, day-in-day out. They spend a lot of time with and listening to, their people.

5) Accept Feedback

Actually, they don’t just accept it, they suck feedback in – they use their excellent listening skills to seek out feedback all the time – in every interaction.

6) Develop Others

Grasping the opportunities, the best managers quickly link them to those who can make progress in their own development – and in line with ongoing Succession Planning, prepare for the future well in advance.

7) Are Accountable

They are very clear that they are ‘where the buck stops’. No blame elsewhere, not upwards deflection of decisions; no ‘someone else’s fault’. They are where the action is and they accept it. It’s down to them.

8) Set Standards

To ensure that everyone is clear, great managers have simple and clear standards throughout their area of operation – ideally created in collaboration with their people.

9) Are Determined

Focusing entirely on value-creation, they stick to plans, policies and change programmes like glue. They have a skill to know and deliver what is right, without veering from their Vision.

10) Can Be Trusted

The best managers are ethically sound, fair and honest. They make promises only when they know they can deliver. Everyone is treated equally and their own behaviour models fairness and transparency.

Simple steps, using them can make 90% of your management very, very effective. Checkout the website below for key information in 40 different people skills to develop your management skills fast!
